Why Don’t Voters Turf Councillors Out? THE VOTER

Long-time Bulldog commenter The Voter wonders why Ottawans keeping practising failure when it comes to electing councillors:

Ottawans keep doing this even though it hasn’t worked in years.

They keep electing the same crew that brought us this mess in the first place. People keep saying that the city has to be accountable, transparent, open and blah-blah-blah. Did those same complainers, (if they bothered to vote at all which many complainers don’t) get rid of those members of Ottawa City Council when they had the chance? No, they didn’t.

People say that if the provincial light-rail inquiry results had come out before the election, Kanata South Councillor Allan Hubley wouldn’t have been re-elected. Really? That was the only thing in his entire time on council that indicated he wasn’t a great councillor? Many other re-elected councillors had worked hard to show people they shouldn’t be returned to but were sent back regardless.

Had Watson presented himself again, voters would have re-elected him. Instead we got Mark Sutcliffe, Watson 2.0, who has yet to do anything of substance as mayor. It takes a woman nine months to produce a baby. In about the same time, what has Sutcliffe produced?

Once voted in to Ottawa city council, councillors have a job for life as long as they remember to sign up in time to get their name on the ballot. I used to think this was an issue in Ottawa only, however the problem seems to extend nationwide, vis a vis Justin Trudeau and Doug Ford to name a couple of others riding in the same boat. What a mess!

Instead of offering “cash back” for people donating to municipal candidates, why not offer cash back to people confirmed to have cast their ballot in a municipal election?

While that might increase turn out, it still leaves open how we get rationale, thoughtful thinking skills in the heads of those casting a ballot, and providing those who do with enough information stripped of the dog whistles of candidates’ propaganda to facilitate their own assessments.
