Close Queen Elizabeth Drive: READER

Frequent Bulldog reader Andrew weighed in on the controversial Queen Elizabeth Drive issue.

As a daily driver on the Queen Elizabeth Drive, please close it.

It is a national heritage “park” not my commuter road. I will find a alternate route, or bus-bike.

There have been thousands of new residents added in the area and not one new park or recreation facility has been added. In fact, the National Capital Commission removed 50 acres of greenspace from the area in 2018, and the city is planning to add 2,400 residents to Lansdowne all while removing 1.5 acres of Lansdowne public greenspace. All these new residents do not have a yard, so public space is critical to the city’s goal of intensification, yet there is no new allocation of greenspace in the area.

Oh My God, I’ve Been LRT Blind-Sided: WATSON

I have enough money to have a car, yet there are tens of thousands of residents who do not and love the Rideau Canal area as much as a car driver. We will all win if it is closed as the increased space is accessible for all citizens of Canada, not just we car drivers and a narrow five-foot strip for everyone else (wheelchairs included).

The conflict between Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and the NCC is not in the best interests of the city or Canada.

I’ll have to tell my friends in North Vancouver and other environs throughout the country that they will soon be able to travel to Ottawa to go for a hike on what was formerly used as a route by commuters to get downtown for work and head home on at the end of a long day. The exhaust from the cars, buses, airplanes, etc used to travel to Ottawa will be a big help in reducing carbon emissions within Canada.

Sounds like having you’re cake and eating it too.

It surprises me more with each successive volley that this is a hill Sutcliffe has chosen to ride his cavalry up and possibly die on. There aren’t enough additional votes behind the wheels of the QED commuters to make a significant difference to him. In addition, his position flies in the face of the Official Plan he just voted to support. It definitely highlights that, like so many other municipal politicians, he doesn’t read the things he votes on. Further than that, it shows his staff lack a certain thoroughness in doing their research that they provide him to back up his public pronouncements and positions.

It looks to me as if he saw a way of taking on the NCC and winning some points in some corner of his fan base. Does he not sit on the NCC Board and what has he done there to carry forward this crusade of his?

  4. Ron Benn says:

What has been missing in all of the chatter on the NCC’s closure of part of the Queen Elizabeth Driveway is where a significant number of disgruntled users work. Users who are accustomed to using the QED as a convenient access/egress route to/from the parking lot at City Hall, which is located near the north end of the QED.

Could it be that Mayor Sutcliffe is speaking out on behalf of himself, some of his fellow councillors and others who report to work at the ivory tower on Laurier Avenue?
