How To Whip Air In A Non-Story

We’ve been having some fun with Citizen-Sun reporter Bruce Garrioch because he has been stuck in the awkward position of trying to keep the Ottawa Senators’ sale story going when nothing publicly is happening.

Furthermore, what is happening behind closed doors, if he knew, would probably put coffee to sleep.

This is no criticism Garrioch who is doing his usual fine job. It’s just a difficult position to find yourself in and kind of funny.

Ottawa Citizen Closes Its Newsroom

Such reporting is known in the business as “whipping air.” Essentially reporting on nothing but still keeping it interesting.

One of the best definitions of whipped air is a little fragment from the small but wonderful Canadian film, The Shipping News.

And when you finish watching this, you’ll know as much as you need to know about “whipped air.”

A small lesson in journalism.
