Hwy. 174 Mishaps Prompts Reader To Call For Fix

This is the response by J.P. Unger to the collapse of a live electrical wire on Highway 174.

Unger witnessed the mishap and said it caused “chaos” on the freeway.

Unger calls for replacement of these kinds of faulty wires across the city.

Dear Mr. Gonthier and Mr. Edgar,Thank you very much for helping get some answers on the Hwy 174 overhead wire collapse.

As per the answers provided in HydroOne/Mr. Edgar’s response, although it is good to see that Hydro One has a plan in place to repair without Quick Sleeves, if Quick Sleeve failures can happen randomly and unpredictably, the big question is obviously how many other locations across the city currently have them, and if above pedestrian or vehicular traffic, do they not require urgent removal or replacement to prevent another potentially fatal wire collapse from happening?
This was clearly a forseeable danger: other cities have already replaced quick sleeves with “stronger full tension compression sleeves”, for example Oshawa, as part of “predictive and corrective actions.”
For Mr. Gonthier and the City, I have to ask:
– In light of such random and unpredictable failure potential of quick sleeves which may be in use by our city’s other electric utility, is Ottawa Hydro aware and already removing or replacing Quick Sleeves?

– Also if, as per Hydro One’s response, construction work such as nearby LRT drilling could prompt such potentially fatal wire junction failure, it’s an indication that it can very well happen again elsewhere and soon, so have the LRT and the city’s construction and contractor community been alerted to this risk that their work may create and required to coordinate with the utilities for immediate replacement if a Quick Sleeve is in the vicinity?
I will just add that this wire collapse happened while in fine weather. It sounds like those quick sleeves need to be replaced as soon as possible even if no direct fatal risk exists because they are not directly above people or vehicles, given the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.
Thank you again, and I sincerely hope that remedial and preventive action is taken as promptly as possible, as the danger is obviously real.
Sincerely,
J. P. Unger
